Profitable and responsible operations in the nuclear, hydroelectric and alternative energy sectors depend on the implementation of processes and technologies that ensure safety, compliance with regulatory requirements and streamlined operations.

For example, Dassault Systèmes helped extend the life of nuclear facilities like Southern California Edison's San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) beyond the typical 40-year plant life:

  • Avoid million-dollar-per-day outages and downtime

  • Retrofit existing reactors to meet license requirements

  • Virtually simulate future shutdowns and maintenance to minimize cost, productivity and safety issues

Explore how our customers have used Product Lifecycle Management solutions to discover real-world benefits by simulating and validating product and systems design in a virtual environment.

GNEP will build on the recent advances made by the President and Congress to stimulate new nuclear plant construction in the U.S. This will be accomplished by demonstrating the success of the streamlined regulations for siting, constructing and operating new nuclear plants through the Nuclear Power 2010 program, and by implementing incentives enacted through the Energy Policy Act of 2005. At 20 percent of the total electricity supply in the nation, nuclear power is the second largest source of domestic electricity, while 70 percent comes from fossil burning fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil). Increasing the amount of electricity generated by nuclear power is critical to moving the nation toward a more sustainable and secure energy future.

Finite element modeling of pre-stressed concrete containment vessels for nuclear power plants poses special challenges. PCCVs, which are heavily reinforced structures, are designed to deform beyond the cracking limits of the concrete. ABAQUS has been used extensively for analyzing such structures in the nuclear utility industry and can be used to assess and improve the performance of these and other similar reinforced concrete structures.
